Back to the Beginning

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

In the beginning, was the WORD. (John 1:1)

In that "WORD", you were created, and your skin was a part of it!

What is skin? Have you asked yourself what skin is?

The skin is also known as the integument. The integumentary system consists of the skin, along with its accessory structures

hair, nails, and cutaneous glands. Being that the skin is the largest organ of the body, that contributes to our self-confidence, and positive self-image.

Why is it an afterthought?

It's okay!

Before I started this journey of self-discovery, my skin was an afterthought too. The beauty of starting from the beginning is that our skin is forgiving. Once you begin to care for your bestie, you will notice the change in her glow. This is the manifestation of forgiveness from your skin to you, the radiance that you begin to experience. How your bestie begins to react to your tender care.

Forgiveness is our portion!

Our skins health improves our attitude about ourselves and our interactions with people. Your skin is the first to provide clues about your overall health whether it be anemia, heart failure, and cancer.

The skin is mostly vulnerable to environmental pollutants, chemical injuries, radiation exposure, trauma, and infection.

Your skin is a wall, a barrier that prevents invasion from a chaotic and spontaneous environment. Intact skin is less likely to be penetrated by infectious organisms due to the skin’s durability from its tough protein called Keratin which is linked by desmosomes thus giving the epithelium its durability.

Make a mental note of the word "durability".

Remember, I said "think of your skin as it having a separate personality". Your skin has its own ecosystem all which work together within the kingdom of your body. In this ecosystem, the skin must be a barrier for water loss and water absorption.

Have you ever thought “why when you’re swimming or in the tube soaking with a glass of wine you don’t absorb all the water?

Your skin prevents you from absorbing excess water or losing excess water.

The epidermis, the top layer of the skin is barrier that protects against the environmental stressors that can damage the deeper layers of the skin. Also, the skin is permeable to drugs and poisons.

Yes, poison! The poison can be disguised in a nicely packaged cosmetic bottle.

In this discovery of loving your skin, find your skins personality.

Forget about the routines for a moment and see what your skin truly needs.

Observe your bestie!

Have you tried the Tissue Test?

On a day of relaxation, where little energy must be exerted,

wash your face with a gentle cleanser.

DO NOT APPLY any moisturizer or serum.

Set a timer for one hour; read a book or your watch your favorite show on Netflix. Then, go to your mirror and take tissue with you.

Look at your skin and then lightly blot your skin with the tissue.

Ask yourself the following questions as you

become an observer of your bestie.

1. Does your face look shiny? Do you notice the tissue absorbing oil?

If yes, your skin is oily

2. Does your face look dry? Is there any oil absorbed by the tissue?

Does your skin feel like nothing changed?

If yes, your skin is balanced

3. Does your face feel tight or flakey? Do you see no oil absorbed by the tissue?

If yes, your skin is dry

4. Does the tissue absorb oil in your forehead, chin, nose but other facial areas are dry (matte)?

If yes, your skin is combination

Now that you understand the type of personality your skin has, you can begin to make purchases for your skin that help bring balance to your skin.

Your skin will speak to you.

It is only a matter of being still to observe what your besties needs.

It is the day after Thanksgiving! Be thankful and grateful even for your skin.

I am thankful for you!

Yours Truly, Your BFFF
